In 1972, UNESCO issued a call to the whole world to "go to the reading society", asking all members of the society to read books, making reading an indispensable part of people's daily life.1995年,国际出版商协会在第二十五届全球大会上提出"世界图书日"的设想,并由西班牙政府将方案提交联合国教科文组织。 In 1995, the International Publishers Association proposed the idea of "World Book Day" at the 25th global conference, and the Spanish government submitted the program to UNESCO. Later, Russia believed that the concept of copyright should be added to World Book Day. The proposal for the establishment of World Book Day was put forward by Spain, which was inspired by the "Saint George's Day" in Catalonia, Spain. According to the library magazine, World Book Day comes from a legend in Catalonia, Spain: the beautiful princess is trapped in the mountains by a dragon, and the brave George defeats the Dragon alone and saves the princess; the gift the princess gives George is a book. From then on, the book became a symbol of courage and strength. April 23 became St. George's day. During the festival, people in Catalonia give roses and books to their relatives and friends.

In 1995, UNESCO declared April 23 "world reading day". April 23, 1616 is the anniversary of the death of Cervantes, a famous Spanish writer, and Shakespeare, a famous British writer.

The inspiration for UNESCO to choose April 23 as world reading day comes from a beautiful legend. April 23 is the death day of Spanish literary giant Cervantes, and it is also the public festival of Catalonia, "Saint George's Day". In fact, the same day is also the anniversary of Shakespeare's birth and death, as well as the birthdays of many writers such as Nabokov, Maurice deluon, the Nobel Prize winner of Icelandic literature, lakerness and so on. Therefore, this day has become a global book day, which seems to be a "fair day". In 1972, UNESCO issued a call to the world to "go to the reading society". It requires all members of the society to read books. Books become a necessity of life and an indispensable part of everyone's daily life. In 1995, UNESCO proclaimed April 23 as "world reading day", which aims to promote reading, publishing and intellectual property protection to the world.

People who want to be scattered around the world, whether you are old or young, whether you are poor or rich, whether you are sick还是健康,都能享受阅读的乐趣,都能尊重和感谢为人类文明做出过巨大贡献的文学、文化、科学、思想大师们,都能保护知识产权。Still healthy, we can enjoy the pleasure of reading, respect and thank the great masters of literature, culture, science and thought who have made great contributions to human civilization, and protect intellectual property rights. On this day of every year, more than 100 countries around the world hold various celebrations and book publicity activities, but this day in China has not been widely known. In the past two years, publishing houses and bookstores have started to hold some public welfare activities.
